Duplex of the Aorta (Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound)

Evaluates the abdominal aorta for aneurysms or narrowing.

Measures blood flow in the renal arteries to assess kidney function and high blood pressure causes.

Examines blood flow into and out of the liver to evaluate liver disease or portal hypertension.

Assesses arteries that supply the intestines, spleen, liver, and stomach for narrowing/blockages.

Some exams require fasting: no food or drink for 8 hours (small sips of water for medication are okay).
You’ll lie comfortably on an exam table while a warm gel is applied to your abdomen.
A handheld device (transducer) is used to capture images of blood flow to your organs.
The test is painless, non-invasive, and usually takes 30–45 minutes.
You can return to normal activities right after.

No food/drink for 8 hours.
